Hello. You've reached the digital address for Peter Mellgard. That's me. Until recently (summer 2026) I was the editor of the Berggruen Press, the Berggruen Institute’s short-lived in-house book-publishing project. RIP. We managed to make a couple good books in a short time, one about more-than-human governance and another about Indian civilization, which you should be able to find online and in some indie bookstores. (Or email me and I'll try to track one down for you.)

Before starting the Press I co-founded Noema Magazine, also published by the Berggruen Institute, and for now I remain part of the team, focusing on special projects, multimedia stories, and significant essays with long-time collaborators. Numerous pieces I commissioned and edited won awards for writing or design or both, and some were selected for inclusion in Best American anthologies.

I write occasionally. The most recent story I did was about sailing through the islands of Southeast Alaska with a crew of environmental activists hoping to preserve the old-growth hemlock and cedar forests that dominate the landscape there. Over the years I have reported other stories from inside lignite mines and artificial lakes in Germany, the edge of disappearing atolls in the Marshall Islands, and the off-grid health clinics in the hills of Haiti. Some of this work was funded by grants from the International Journalists’ Program, the United Nations Foundation, the European Forest Institute, and a Mongabay Special Reporting Initiative.

I'm working on some new stuff now, like garden projects. More soon. If you need an editor or just want to say hello, get in touch: hi@petermellgard.info.
